Let me assume to be given a chance to give a talk on Comments on blogs.
Blog Comments are the replies to a blog content.It is supposed to be readers opinion on the subject mentioned in the blog. Blog comments can be those that appreciate the blog or those that criticism the blog.Beyond this there is spam.
Blogs that appreciate the blog content or the reason behind the blog as in you did something and you blog it, is a delight to the blogger.While criticizing comments are not nice but in some cases bloggers to attempt to create controversy and then sell the controversy.But at large Criticizing comments are tolerable as they are a sign bring some readers.Either an Appreciator or Criticizer you need readers else its like loneliness in Cyberspace.Similar to a Social networking profile with no friends.
But this makes people who broadcast their blogs or Advertise their blogs to achieve the objective of getting more readers which could probably lead to more comments on the blogs depending on the nature of readers.
There is another category who are into spamming, spamming is usually not done by bloggers or readers but they are actually program scripts which does it and they may either provide generic statements which could invite either the blog owner or other readers into his blog , this is achieved by writing generic but attention worthy comments and also other attention tricks like photos attached to your comments,

I consider a good comment with a nice photograph for your comment a nice way to market your blog, although some Nariscus like bloggers would not reply but the beginners do certainly respond to it. Gravatar is a good option for that especially on self hosted wordpress based blogs.
